Greetings!
I have arrived in Doha, Qatar. Local time is 9:10pm on May. 1st. I am traveling with another intern, Jesse. We just finished our 15 hr flight from Houston, TX and we both could use a bed to sleep in. Thankfully the airline we chose is extremely accommodating.
When we first got on the plane we had a blanket, pillow and a little bag of things sitting on our seats. In the bag was a travel toothbrush and toothpaste, slipper socks, and a sleeping mask for the eyes. There was a personal television for each traveler with a remote/controller and the options of: tv shows, movies, games, news, and music (all complimentary). Headphones were included for use. Any thoughts of being bored quickly left my mind.
Moments after getting settled, they came around with little candies and a "freshening towel", followed by some mix of crackers and things similar to bits n bites but more middle east style of crackers, etc and a drink. Take note: all the drinks were complimentary and ranged from water, orange, apple, pineapple juices, all the pops, coffee, tea and even wine!! With a choice of red or white.
A few hours into the flight I was woken up by a flight attendant offering me dinner. The dinner was good. It was a chicken and vegetable curry with mashed potatoes and some other indian style appetizers. Also received cheese and crackers, a warm bun and butter and some delicious chocolate cake with a choice of drink.
I realize this is a great deal of information on what I ate, which is not generally the conversation piece I would choose, but their service was amazing!! During the flight I did my best to fall asleep, and was successful for small snippets of time. One time I was woken up by the flight attendant and asked if I would like some ice cream. Being only half awake I decided I had heard wrong and quickly cleared my throat and requested her to repeat herself. She repeated herself and again I had heard her say "ice cream". She began to tell me it was Ben and Jerry's Cherry Chaos(i think that's the kind.. again i was asleep). WOAH! hold the phones! Ice cream on a plane ride?? Not only that, but Ben and Jerry's?? That was a happiest wake up call I got the whole 15 hr flight. Tasted amazing. To refrain from torturing you beyond this point, I will sum up my breakfast as "large and delicious" with the choice of fruit pancakes or omelet as the main. It felt like every time I was woken up it was for something to eat or drink.
On to other topics...
The movie selection was superb! There was disney movies such as Beauty and the Beast and Aristocats, tangled and the kings speech were available as well as inception, the tourist, etc. I managed to fall asleep to inception and enjoy almost all of the tourist and some of tangled. My main focus was to sleep, and so I spent a large portion of time listening to music and resting waiting for sleep to come.
Now, I am sitting here in the airport and still need to sleep. I think at this point we are going to head over to the quiet room and see if we can locate a somewhat safe place to sleep. Sorry this is short and sweet, but I will contact when I arrive in Dar es Salaam.
