So, I woke up with a jolt, noting that it was light outside. Quickly checking my cellphone, I realized I had slept past the jog time. I rolled out of bed on the wrong side and got annoyed with myself... again. My roommate woke up too and we both went over to the main guesthouse for breakfast. I tried my best to ignore that I was annoyed with myself while I ate breakfast. I got ready to go to a meeting with WFT and we left at 8:30am. Jesse and I are the two interns working with WFT and Joel and Deanna came to attend our WFT meeting as well as our sustainable cities meeting. WFT and Sustainable Cities are both NGOs that are trying to assist in bettering Dar. [insert info on sustainable cities meeting and WFT meeting].
So we are still waiting for our permits currently. They are so delayed right now, which is why I am talking about tourist adventures. As of yet... we are still here on only tourist visas. I do get to meet with WFT on Monday in the morning and very casually go over tasks needing my assistance. A few things we discussed in the meeting today were the need for a database of the information and a lot of research needs to be completed to broaden the possible donors for the fund. From this meeting I have a better understand of what phase WFT is in. When we first discussed WFT back in Canada I was under the impression that this company was well on their way in facilitating to the marginalized women of Dar es Salaam. I had anticipated working with the organization and the women that were benefiting from the fund. Unfortunately, the organization is in phase one and requires a lot of paperwork, research, database entire, advertisement and new contacts. I say 'unfortunately' for the simple fact that I had hoped to be able to interact with the women themselves, but I am still excited to be a part of the building of the fund itself.
After our meeting we came home and sat around waiting for the other interns to return. We were all feeling like hamsters in a cage, as our security protocol has us either in taxis to places or in buildings[all day every day... unless we go for a walk in the morning with Cherie]. As if our prayers had been answered, Cherie called me and told me that if we wanted the three of us could walk down the street to a local fruit stand and bakery. Freedom at last! This freedom of course came with the conditions of going in threes or more. In any case, Jesse, Deanna, and myself booked it out of the guesthouse and into freedom! The bakery was the farthest away, so we ventured there first. I would like to point out that these streets are full of garbage and it is strewn all over. As you can imagine with all the heat and humidity... the garbage protrudes a rather strong scent which makes me want to upchuck! Of course at this moment I could do nothing more than smile and somehow find the sweet smell of freedom amongst the stench. We passed the military base and walk over a bridge until we saw the bakery on the other side of the road. Crossing the road was a challenging task but we managed to get across without losing any body parts!! woot! In the bakery they had some interesting treats. I purchased a couple banjabis[they are similar to the samosas in Canada), some veg samosas which use a different pastry and seasoning with the veggies inside and then these donut type things that uhhh I think are called vitrabua [I'll check my receipt as I think I spelt it wrong]. On the way back we stopped at the fruit stand and picked up two pineapples and a huge bunch of bananas. Probably about 12 of them. It cost me 8500 TSH which is basically $5 bucks. SWEET!
We got back to the house and everyone else had arrived so we went to the resort again and enjoyed the sun and beach. It is becoming a wonderful routine... This time we even got the food we ordered! cool!!!
Sorry this is coming out so late. Its been a bit of a busy few days and we keep losing the electricity. I'll get to the 6th, the 7th and today... hopefully today! :)
